At a meeting of the Knight Commission on Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy in Aspen, Colo., Google's Marissa Mayer challenged journalists to re-think how they view their work in a digital era where the Internet makes it possible to breathe long life and utility into the "atomic unit" of media consumption, the story.

Mayer, vice president of search and user experience at Google, explains her thinking in a brief video for Knight Foundation VP of communications and blogger Marc Fest.

The Knight meeting was in conjunction with the Aspen Institute's Forum on Communication and Society, which featured voices as varied as former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and MediaNews CEO Dean Singleton. Of course there was talk about the future of news, including a panel discussion captured in video. Fest's blog covering both events makes for lively reading and is here.
